Blinkist review

Blinkist condenses books and podcasts into short summaries you can read or listen to in about 15 minutes. Most of the library is nonfiction: business, self-improvement, psychology, science, history. Some fiction is included too. It suits people who want the main ideas of a book before committing to it, or who like to fill a commute or workout with something more substantial than a playlist.

In daily use you open the app, pick a title or take the daily pick, and either skim the text in short sections or let the narration play. You set goals early on, and recommendations and curated collections are built around them. The audio player is the part most people end up relying on. A Pro tier on Android adds AI tools that summarize your own articles, PDFs and videos.

Why we picked it: It has a large, well-organised library and solid audio, and it is one of the few tools that makes skimming a book's argument quick and painless.

Watch out for: A summary is not the book. Nuance, evidence and stories get cut, and nearly everything beyond the free daily pick needs a paid subscription.

What we like

  • Library of thousands of summaries, with the stores citing 7,500 to 9,000+
  • Every summary comes as both text and narrated audio
  • Short sections make it easy to stop and resume
  • Goal-based recommendations and curated collections
  • Available on both iPhone and Android

What could be better

  • Most of the library sits behind a subscription
  • Summaries strip out the detail and evidence of the original books
  • Selection leans heavily toward self-help and business titles

Questions about Blinkist

Is Blinkist free?

The app is free to download and offers a daily free summary. Full access to the library needs a paid subscription. A higher Pro tier adds AI summarizing tools.

Which platforms does it run on?

Blinkist is available on iOS and Android, and it also works in a web browser at blinkist.com.

Can I use it offline?

Subscribers can download summaries and listen or read without a connection. Check the current plan details before relying on this.

Does it replace reading the actual book?

Not really. It gives you the core argument, which helps you decide whether a book is worth your time. You lose most of the examples and depth.

What are the alternatives?

Headway, Shortform and getAbstract offer similar summary services. Shortform goes into more depth per book, and getAbstract leans toward business.
