Discord

Discord started with gamers and is now home to communities around almost every hobby, course and product. Servers combine text channels, voice rooms, events and threads.

Why we picked it: the mobile app handles voice chat and notifications well, and most communities are free to join.

Watch out for: notification settings take time to tame on busy servers.
