Google Classroom
Free class hub for posting assignments, collecting work and giving feedback, tied closely to Google Drive and Docs

Quick verdict
If your class runs on Google Classroom, you will want the app for deadlines, notifications and quick grading. It works best as a companion to the web version and other Google apps, not as a full replacement.
Best for Students and teachers in schools that use Google accounts who want to check assignments and feedback on mobile

Google Classroom review
Google Classroom is where many schools post assignments, share materials and return grades. Teachers create a class, invite students directly or with a join code, and hand out work that lands in organised Drive folders. It can automatically give each student their own copy of a Google Doc. It is free for schools, non-profits and anyone with a personal Google account, so it also suits tutors, clubs and home educators.
On a phone or tablet, the app is mostly for checking in. Students see what is due, open the attached files and turn in work. Teachers can see who has submitted, leave comments and grade on the go. Notifications flag new posts and returned work. Longer writing or detailed marking is still easier on a laptop, and much of the work happens inside other Google apps rather than in Classroom itself.
Why we picked it: If your school already runs on Google accounts, this is the simplest free way to keep classwork, deadlines and feedback in one place.
Watch out for: The iOS app has a low average rating (about 2.1 from roughly 37,000 ratings), and you will probably need Docs, Drive and other Google apps installed to do real work.

Questions about Google Classroom
Is Google Classroom free?
Yes, the app is free and there are no in-app purchases listed. Schools can choose paid Google Workspace for Education editions for extra admin and teaching tools, but basic Classroom costs nothing.
Do I need a school account to use it?
No. Anyone with a personal Google account can create or join classes, though many features are designed around school-managed accounts.
Which devices does it run on?
There are apps for iPhone and iPad and for Android, and Classroom also works in a web browser on computers and Chromebooks.
Can I use it offline?
Classroom mostly needs a connection to load posts and turn in work. Some offline editing is possible through Google Docs and Drive if you set it up in advance.
What are the alternatives?
Microsoft Teams for Education, Canvas, Schoology and Seesaw are common options, and the right one usually depends on what your school already uses.
From the developer: how Google Classroom describes itself
Classroom is a free service for schools, non-profits, and anyone with a personal Google account. Classroom makes it easy for learners and instructors to connect—inside and outside of schools. Classroom saves time and paper, and makes it easy to create classes, distribute assignments, communicate, and stay organized.
Classroom is designed to help teachers create, collect, and grade assignments paperlessly, including time-saving features like the ability to automatically make a copy of a Google Document for each student. It also creates Drive folders for each assignment and for each student to help keep everyone organized.
Students can keep track of what’s due on the Assignments page and begin working with just a click. Teachers can quickly see who has or hasn't completed the work, and provide direct, real-time feedback and grades right in Classroom.
With the mobile app for iOS, students and teachers can view their classes and communicate with their classmates in real time. Students can open their assignments and work on them right from their iPhone or iPad. Teachers can keep track of who has turned in work and grade the assignment - at school or on the go. Students and teachers receive notifications when they have new content in Classroom, so they are always up to date.
There are many benefits of using Classroom:
Easy to set up Teachers can add students directly or share a code with their class to join. It takes just minutes to set up.
Saves time The simple, paperless assignment workflow allows teachers to create, review, and grade assignments quickly, all in one place.
Improves organization Students can see all of their assignments on an assignments page, and all class materials (e.g., documents, photos, and videos) are automatically filed into folders in Google Drive.
Enhances communication Classroom allows teachers to send announcements and start class discussions instantly. Students can share resources with each other or provide answers to questions on the stream.
Secure Like the rest of Google Workspace for Education services, Classroom contains no ads, never uses your content or student data for advertising purposes.
