Google Play Books review
Google Play Books is Google's store and reader for ebooks, audiobooks, comics and manga. You buy titles individually rather than paying a monthly fee, and your library follows you to phones, tablets, the web, and cars through Android Auto or CarPlay. It suits people who already live in Google's ecosystem, or anyone who wants one app for both reading and listening without a subscription.
Day to day, it is a tidy reader. You can change fonts, text size and brightness, sort books onto your own shelves, and download titles to read offline. Notes you take sync to Google Drive. Audiobooks offer speed control, a sleep timer and bookmarks, and comics get a panel zoom mode called Bubble Zoom. Samples let you try a book before buying, and kids can tap words for definitions or have books read aloud in English.
Why we picked it: Pay-per-book pricing, ebooks and audiobooks in one library, and wide device support make it a practical alternative to subscription services.
Watch out for: Kids' reading tools are English only, and book insights and recaps only work on select English titles. Buying on iPhone can be less direct than on Android.
What we like
- No subscription required, you pay only for the books you choose
- Ebooks, audiobooks, comics and manga share a single library
- Works on phone, tablet, web, Android Auto and CarPlay
- Offline downloads and custom shelves for organizing
- Free samples to preview books before buying
What could be better
- Reading help for kids and book insights are limited to English
- Audiobooks must be bought individually, which adds up for heavy listeners
- Notes and syncing tie you to a Google account and Google Drive
