PeakFinder

Point your phone at a skyline and see the name of every peak in view, even without a signal

by PeakFinder GmbH · listed Oct 21, 2026

Quick verdict

If you spend time in the hills, PeakFinder is a small one-time cost for an app that reliably answers 'what mountain is that?' offline. Just make sure your phone has a decent compass.

Best for Hikers, climbers and landscape photographers who want to identify mountains on the spot, even without signal

PeakFinder review

PeakFinder labels the mountains around you. Hold up your phone and it draws a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding terrain, matched to your camera view, with names for over a million peaks worldwide, from major summits to small local hills. It is aimed at hikers, climbers, skiers, photographers and anyone who has stood on a viewpoint wondering what they are looking at.

In daily use it is quick: open it, let the compass and motion sensors settle, and the outlines line up over the real ridges. Everything runs offline, so it still works above the treeline with no reception. A digital telescope helps you pick out less prominent peaks, a 'show me' option points you toward a named summit, and you can move your viewpoint by GPS, by searching the peak list or by using an online map. It also plots the sun and moon paths with rise and set times, which is handy for planning photos.

Why we picked it: It does one job well, works anywhere offline, and costs a single upfront price with no ads or subscriptions.

Watch out for: Accuracy depends on your phone's compass, and the camera overlay needs a gyroscope and compass, so some cheaper Android devices only get the drawn panorama.

What we like

  • Works fully offline anywhere in the world
  • Covers more than a million named peaks
  • Camera overlay lines the panorama up with the real view
  • Sun and moon paths with rise and set times for photo planning
  • One-time purchase with no ads or recurring fees

What could be better

  • Paid upfront, with no free version to try first
  • Alignment can drift when the phone's compass is poorly calibrated
  • Camera mode is unavailable on devices without a gyroscope and compass
  • Map-based viewpoint selection needs a connection

Questions about PeakFinder

How much does PeakFinder cost?

It is a one-time purchase, listed at 4.99 USD on the App Store and 5.99 USD on Google Play at the time of writing. There are no subscriptions, in-app purchases or ads.

Does it work without mobile data?

Yes. The peak data and terrain rendering work offline worldwide; only choosing a viewpoint from the online map needs a connection.

Which platforms is it on?

It is available for iPhone and iPad on the App Store and for Android on Google Play.

Will the camera overlay work on my phone?

It needs a compass and a gyroscope. On devices without those sensors you still get the drawn panorama, but not the live camera view.

What can I use it for besides naming peaks?

You can mark favourite mountains and places, fly virtually from summit to summit, and check where the sun and moon will rise and set from a given spot.
