Quick verdict
A reliable, widely recognised speed tester with more depth than most, including loaded latency and video checks. Worth installing, and worth the small fee if the ads bother you.

Speedtest measures how fast your connection really is, whether you are on home Wi-Fi or mobile data. A test reports download and upload speed, jitter, and ping at three points: idle, while downloading, and while uploading. Beyond the basic test there is a video check that estimates the highest streaming resolution, load time and buffering, plus coverage maps built from real user tests so you can compare carriers in places you visit often. On Android the app also folds in Downdetector for checking whether a popular service is down.
Day to day it is quick: open it, tap go, and you have numbers within about half a minute, with a live graph showing whether the connection holds steady. Past results are saved, so you can track a flaky line over time or show your provider proof that you are not getting the speed you pay for. Sharing a result takes a tap.
Why we picked it: It is the speed test most people and support lines already recognise, and the loaded-latency figures are genuinely useful for gaming and video calls.
Watch out for: The free version shows ads, though a small one-time purchase removes them. Each test also uses a noticeable chunk of mobile data.
What we like
- Fast one-tap test with download, upload, jitter and three ping readings
- Video test shows realistic streaming quality and buffering
- Coverage maps let you compare carriers by location
- Saved history makes it easy to document ongoing problems
- Single or multi-connection modes for different kinds of testing
What could be better
- Ads in the free version unless you pay to remove them
- Repeated tests can eat into a limited mobile data plan
- Downdetector integration appears only in the Android description
- Results can vary depending on which test server is chosen
Questions about Speedtest by Ookla
Is Speedtest free?
Yes, all testing features are free. Ads are shown, and the App Store listing offers ad removal for $0.99 as a one-time in-app purchase.
Which platforms does it run on?
It is available on both iPhone and Android, with the same version number on both stores at the time of writing.

Can it tell me if a service like a streaming app is down?
The Android version includes Downdetector, which shows real-time outage reports for popular services. The iOS listing does not mention it.
What are the alternatives?
Fast.com from Netflix is a simpler ad-free option focused on download speed, and many routers and carriers offer their own built-in tests.
