Flightradar24 review

Flightradar24 shows planes moving across a live world map and lets you tap any of them to see the route, aircraft type, altitude, speed, timings and often a photo of the actual airframe. You can also hold your phone up to the sky to identify a plane overhead, check airport arrival and departure boards with delay stats and weather, and replay past flights. It suits travellers checking on a flight, people picking someone up from the airport, and aviation enthusiasts who simply like watching traffic.

Day to day it is quick to open and easy to read. Search by flight number, airline or airport, bookmark the flights you care about, and filter the map when it gets crowded. The 3D view, which follows a flight with detailed liveries, is a fun extra rather than a core tool. Most of what casual users need sits in the free tier, while Silver and Gold subscriptions add longer history and more detail.

Why we picked it: It is the familiar name in flight tracking, with a broad free feature set and a polished map on both iPhone and Android.

Watch out for: Some deeper data and history are behind paid tiers, and coverage depends on receiver networks, so remote areas can show gaps.

What we like

  • Live global map with rich per-flight details
  • Point-at-the-sky identification of planes overhead
  • Airport boards with delays and weather in the free version
  • Playback of past flights and historical data
  • Wear OS support for nearby aircraft on Android

What could be better

  • Longer history and advanced data require Silver or Gold subscriptions
  • Tracking coverage can be patchy over oceans and remote regions
  • Busy map views can feel cluttered without filters

HOW IT WORKS

Most aircraft today are equipped with ADS-B transponders that transmit positional data. Flightradar24 has a rapidly growing network of 50,000 ground stations to receive this data that then shows up as aircraft moving on a map in the app. In an expanding number of regions, with the help of multilateration (MLAT), we’re able to calculate the positions of aircraft that don’t have ADS-B transponders. Coverage is subject to change at any time.
