Windy.com turns forecast data into animated maps you can pan and scrub through time. It offers around 50 layers, covering wind and gusts, rain and thunderstorms, temperature and pressure, clouds and visibility for pilots, and waves, swell, tides and currents for people on the water. You can compare major models such as ECMWF, GFS and ICON, plus regional ones for Europe, the US and Australia. It also includes radar, a global satellite composite and a lightning layer. It suits pilots, sailors, surfers, kiters, paragliders and anyone who wants to see the weather rather than just read it.
Day to day, you open the map, pick a layer and drag the timeline to watch a front or a storm move in. Tapping any spot brings up a detailed forecast for that location, and you can save favourite places. The free version has no ads. An optional Premium subscription adds extras such as more frequent and finer-grained forecast data.
