Instagram review

Instagram is Meta's social app built around photos and short videos. You can post to your feed, share Stories and Notes that vanish after a day, make and watch Reels, and message friends one to one or in groups. There is also an Explore tab for finding new accounts and a shopping side for browsing brands. It suits anyone who wants to keep up with friends, follow creators or share their own photos and clips.

Day to day, most of the app is about scrolling. The home feed and Reels tab mix posts from people you follow with recommended content, so it is easy to lose time. Posting is quick, with filters, music, stickers and templates built in, and Close Friends lets you share some Stories with a smaller group. Messaging is a big part of the app now, and many people use it as their main chat app.

Why we picked it: It is still one of the main places where friends, creators and small businesses share photos and video, and the editing and sharing tools are easy to use.

Watch out for: Feeds lean heavily on algorithmic recommendations and ads, and Meta collects a lot of data about how you use the app.

What we like

  • Built-in filters, music, stickers and templates for quick editing
  • Close Friends lists for sharing with a smaller group
  • Explore tab makes it easy to find new creators and interests
  • Available on both iPhone and Android

What could be better

  • Feeds are full of recommended posts and ads
  • Easy to spend far more time scrolling than intended
  • Extensive data collection by Meta
  • Some features are not available in every country

Questions about Instagram

Is Instagram free?

Yes, the app is free to download and use. Google Play lists in-app purchases, which cover optional extras rather than core features.

Which platforms does it run on?

Instagram is available on iPhone through the App Store and on Android through Google Play. You can also use it in a web browser.

Does it work offline?

Not really. You need an internet connection to load feeds, watch Reels, post or send messages.

What about privacy?

Instagram is owned by Meta and collects a lot of usage data to personalise content and ads. You can make your account private and limit who sees your Stories, but it is worth reviewing the privacy settings after signing up.

What are the alternatives?

TikTok is the main rival for short videos, while BeReal offers more casual photo sharing with friends. Pixelfed is an option if you want a decentralised photo app.
