Threads

Meta's text-first social app for public conversations, tied closely to your Instagram account

by Instagram, Inc. · listed Nov 3, 2026

Quick verdict

Worth installing if you already use Instagram and want a busy, easy-to-start text feed. If you care about distance from Meta or a chronological feed, look at alternatives first.

Best for Instagram users who want a text-based feed for public conversations with people they already follow

Threads review

Threads is Meta's answer to the short-post social feed. You write text updates, add images or polls, reply to others and follow accounts across topics from sport to TV to careers. It is built on top of Instagram, so you can carry over your username, follow the same people in a few taps and keep your block list. It suits people who already live in the Instagram world and want a place for chatter rather than photos.

Day to day it feels familiar: a scrolling feed, quick replies, trending topics and communities grouped around interests. Controls are reasonably thorough, with options to limit who replies to or mentions you and a Hidden Words filter for terms you never want to see. Private 1:1 and group DMs let a public back-and-forth move somewhere quieter, and newer touches like ghost posts add some variety.

Why we picked it: If you want a mainstream text feed with a large existing audience and you already use Instagram, Threads has the easiest start of any option.

Watch out for: The feed is algorithm-driven and heavily shaped by Meta's recommendations, and your data sits within Meta's wider ecosystem. Ratings on Android are noticeably lower than on iPhone.

What we like

  • Quick setup using your Instagram username and follows
  • Solid controls over replies, mentions and filtered words
  • Supports text, images, polls and ghost posts
  • Built-in 1:1 and group direct messages
  • Large active user base across interests

What could be better

  • Closely tied to Meta and Instagram, which some will not want
  • Feed leans on algorithmic recommendations
  • Android reviews are markedly weaker than iOS ones

Questions about Threads

Is Threads free?

Yes, the app is free to download and use. The Google Play listing mentions in-app purchases, but the core posting and reading features cost nothing.

Which platforms is it on?

Threads is available on iPhone and Android, and there is also a web version.

Do I need an Instagram account?

Threads was designed to work with an Instagram login, and linking one lets you bring over your username, follows and blocks. Check the current sign-up options in the app if you would rather not link the two.

Can I control who sees or replies to my posts?

Yes. You can limit who replies to or mentions you, choose who sees your posts and filter out words with Hidden Words.

What are the alternatives?

X, Bluesky and Mastodon cover similar ground. Bluesky and Mastodon appeal to people who want a feed less tied to a big platform.
