Wise review
Wise is a money app for anyone who regularly deals in more than one currency, such as freelancers with overseas clients, people living abroad, frequent travellers, or families sending money home. You can send transfers to more than 70 countries, hold and convert around 40 currencies, and get local account details like a UK sort code, a European IBAN or Australian account numbers so others can pay you as if you banked locally. A linked debit card lets you spend and withdraw cash in many countries.
Day to day, the app is clear about costs. Before you confirm a transfer it shows the exchange rate, the fee and the expected arrival time, so there are few surprises. Wise uses the mid-market rate and charges a visible fee instead of hiding a markup in the rate. Many transfers arrive within seconds, though some take longer. Card controls such as freezing and push alerts for every transaction are easy to reach.
Why we picked it: Transparent pricing and local account details in several currencies make it a practical alternative to bank wires.
Watch out for: Features depend on your country, and fees apply to conversions and some transfers, so it is not free to use.
What we like
- Uses the mid-market exchange rate with the fee shown upfront
- Local account details in several currencies for receiving payments
- Holds and converts around 40 currencies in one account
- Card controls and instant notifications for every transaction
- Many transfers arrive within seconds
What could be better
- Conversion and transfer fees apply, which add up on large or frequent moves
- Available products and card access vary by country
- Not a full bank, so some services like loans are not offered
