Slack is a messaging app for work. Conversations are sorted into channels by project, team or topic, and direct messages handle quick one-to-one chats. You can bring in people from outside your company, such as clients or contractors, share files, hold audio or video calls with screen sharing, and connect a large catalogue of other apps like Google Drive, Asana or Zendesk. It suits any team that wants to move discussion out of email, from small groups to large companies.
On a phone, Slack is mainly for keeping up: reading threads, replying, sending a voice or video clip when typing is awkward, and approving requests from connected tools without switching apps. Notifications can be tuned per channel, which matters once a workspace grows busy. Search is fast, and paid workspaces get extras such as shared docs, project templates and task tracking. AI search and conversation summaries require a separate add-on.
